University Support Programs

Academic Center for Excellence (ACE)
The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) is a multifaceted academic support program designed to help UIC students accomplish their academic goals. ACE is open to all UIC students, from freshman through graduate level. ACE sponsors academic workshops, test preparation seminars, and other programs to support student success.

African American Academic Network (AAAN)
The African American Academic Network (AAAN) is an academic and student development resource program that seeks to address the unique interests and needs of African American undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Chicago. A unit within the division of Student Affairs, AAAN's primary mission is to increase the recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of African American students.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Concerns (GLBTC)
Dedicated to creating a safe learning environment for all people, the OGLBTC provides knowledge and educational resources to combat prejudice, misunderstanding, and misinformation about issues of a gender identity and sexual / affectional orientation.

Honors College
The Honors College is composed of students who attained a high level of academic performance in high school or who have maintained a 3.40 GPA or higher during their enrollment at UIC. Students must submit an additional application to the Honors College to be considered for admission. All students in the Honors College are expected to participate in additional Honors courses each semester during their enrollment.

The Honors College also provides tutoring services to all students on campus in several courses. A tutoring schedule and a list of available courses can be found here.

Latin American Recruitment and Educational Services Program (LARES)
To empower students by providing personal growth and educational opportunities and to prepare leaders who will make individual and collective contributions toward the cultural and social advancement of the Latino community.

The Mathematical Sciences Learning Center
This new facility is open all day, five days a week, and offers a comfortable setting and both TA and peer tutoring. It also offers laptops for checkout and use in the center, supported by a wireless network.

Native American Support Program (NASP)
The Native American Support Program (NASP) strives to increase the enrollment, retention and graduation rates of Native American students. NASP fosters a climate supportive of positive academic experiences for Native American students at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Ombudsperson
An Ombudsperson is an advocate for fairness, who investigates student complaints, reports the findings, and helps to achieve equitable settlements. This person analyzes both sides of the situation impartially to ensure that students receive fair treatment from all offices within the university. The Ombudsperson may serve as a counselor, go-between, mediator, informal fact finder, or upward administration feedback mechanism.

Tutorium in Intensive English
Provide English as a second language instruction that enables non-native speakers to acquire the skills necessary to meet their academic, professional, social, and personal goals.

Urban Health Program
The Urban Health Program (UHP) was created to recruit, retain and graduate students from groups underrepresented in the health professions, specifically African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans who desire to practice in medically underserved urban areas. The ultimate goal is to train a cadre of underrepresented health professionals, Masters and Doctoral graduates dedicated to improving the quality and availability of health care services in underserved urban areas.

Writing Center
Provides tutoring services in writing. Tutors can assist with all aspects of your writing, including brainstorming, outlining, revising and proofreading, but they will not do the work for you--they will do it with you.

Women in Science and Engineering
The goal of the UIC Women in Science and Engineering Program, WISE, is to increase the number of women students pursuing and graduating in science, technology, engineering and math, STEM, disciplines, and to promote the recruitment, retention and advancement of women who have chosen academic careers.
