Fellowship: Courses
The program extends over two academic semesters of coursework and practicum, with most students beginning their studies in the Fall. Fellows will be evaluated through coursework, case reports, four practical exams, and two live patient exams.
Fellows participate in the following:
- Advanced Manipulation & Manual Therapy I and II (3 credits each)
- Clinical Reasoning in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy I and II (2 credits each)
- Clinical Mentorship I and II (3 credits each) – 440 hours over the course of the Program
- 1:1 Mentored Practice (4 hours/week) – Tuesday (minimum 130 hours over the period of fellowship)
- Mentored Clinical Practice – 20 hours/week. Currently, fellows participate in the 20 hours/week of mentored clinical practice by becoming employed by the University of Illinois Medical Center (UIMC) at Chicago Physical Therapy department during the time period of their fellowship. Potential applicants must meet requirements for employment at UIMC or any other site where mentored practice might occur.
- Teach as laboratory assistants in the Musculoskeletal courses (seven hours/week) in the UIC Doctor of Physical Therapy program
- Directed studies (e.g., Radiology rounds, Orthopedic rounds, pharmacology independent study, anatomy review) dependent upon a learning needs assessment for each individual fellow
