Admission Criteria | Application Materials

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for admission:

  • License to practice physical therapy in the State of Illinois at the time of matriculation into the program.  Applicants who are licensed in another state or country may apply to the program but they may not begin the program until the Illinois license is received.
  • Evidence of one year of practice in the area of orthopedic physical therapy (at least 2000 hours).
  • Completion of additional study in the area of orthopedic physical therapy as evidenced by: a postprofessional degree in orthopedic physical therapy or a related area, certification as an Orthopedic Physical Therapist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties, completion of an orthopedic physical therapy residency program or related area or other documented evidence of extensive continuing education or self study in the area of orthopedic physical therapy.

The Admissions Decision
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of UIC Department of Physical Therapy faculty and UICMC Director of Physical Therapy Services. Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Academic education
  • Clinical education and mentoring experiences
  • Clinical experience in orthopedic physical therapy
  • Research experience
