Fellowship in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy

classroom demonstration shwoing proper techniqueThe UIC Fellowship in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy program is designed to provide advanced manipulation and orthopedic manual physical therapy training to licensed physical therapists, consistent with the guidelines established by the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy. The program involves didactic and practical coursework and mentored clinical practice, including 440 supervised hours, 130 of which are spent one on one with a mentor. A strong emphasis is placed upon clinical reasoning and evidence based evaluative and management skills, including thrust and non-thrust manipulation.

The UIC Fellowship in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy program began its inaugural class in Fall 2005, graduating its first Fellow in July 2006. The program is pleased to announce that its class size has increased to four fellows.

The deadline for admission is February 1.

Successful applicants are employed by the University of Illinois Medical Center as Fellows for the 12-month duration of the program. As employees of the Medical Center, tuition is waived for the graduate coursework taken during this time period.

Credentialing
In July 2006, the UIC Fellowship in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy received credentialing from the American Physical Therapy Association. UIC now becomes one of only 18 credentialed programs in the U.S. and the only program based in Illinois.

Upon successful completion of a credentialed fellowship program, students can apply for Fellow status in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT).

Mission and Goals
The primary purpose of the UIC Fellowship in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy is to facilitate physical therapists in the acquisition of advanced knowledge and clinical reasoning skills in orthopedic manual physical therapy with an emphasis on evidenced based practice, a strong foundation in the basic and applied sciences and scientific inquiry.

The goals of the fellowship are to:

  • Provide a curriculum that meets the requirements for recognition by the AAOMPT and for certification by the APTA.
  • Promote expert practice in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy including:
  • Clinical reasoning and differential diagnostic abilities
  • Utilization of scientific evidence underlying OMPT to address evaluation and management of clinical problems
  • Advanced knowledge of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and tissue healing and response
  • Expertise in manual and manipulative techniques for the spine and extremities.
  • Serve the community by providing participants with the opportunity to teach and practice within the community and by providing relevant and quality continuing education to community therapists.
  • Promote the use of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy in the United States as a safe, effective and efficient intervention.
  • Promote the development of clinical and academic faculty in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy in the United States.
  • Prepare each fellow to fill the role of mentor teacher and clinical specialist and develop requisite skills to be an effective adult educator for OMPT education.
  • Provide each fellow with the skills to critically appraise the research literature.
