Research conducted at the UIC Department of Occupational Therapy has real-world impact that can improve people’s lives. Closely entwined with clinical practice and academics, our research generates new insights, knowledge, resources, and evidence for practice that benefits students, therapists, and clients alike. We lead the field in the generation of new knowledge for practice, as evidenced in our funded research and the wealth of books and articles emanating from the department. We are also home to the renowned Model of Human Occupation Clearinghouse, a thriving publishing and research center that supports occupational therapy practitioners throughout the world.

Recent Areas of Research
  • Development of interventions to reduce falling and fear of falling in people with multiple sclerosis
  • Identification of etiology and occupational consequences of post-infectious fatigue syndromes
  • Development of services to help homeless persons find and maintain housing
  • Study of model for independent living and employment program for persons living with AIDS
  • Examination of interpersonal dynamics of therapy and impact on outcomes
  • Evaluation of services that enable persons living in nursing homes to find and function in independent living settings
  • How federal policies affect disabled persons’ access to assistive devices and impact their quality of life
  • Creation of clinical assessments, intervention approaches and software that will enhance the practice of occupational therapists
  • Developing and testing of a model of cultural competence
  • Building the capacity of service providers for evaluating the impact of their programs
  • Studying the factors affecting the OT & PT job market, including demand for and supply of occupational and physical therapy personnel view workforce report (.pdf)

Scholarship of Practice Lecture Series
The Department of Occupational Therapy regularly invites distinguished speakers from the field to present on a variety of topics. Seminars are held during the fall and spring terms.
