Programs in Nutrition
UIC's Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition offers five degree programs to help students reach any kind of professional goal in nutrition and dietetics:
Bachelor of Science, Coordinated Program
For students who want to become a registered dietitian
This program combines the coursework with the internship that prepares graduates to take the American Dietetic Association Commission on Dietetics Registration examination to become registered dietitians. While it can be pursued at any degree level - bachelor's, master's or doctorate - it is the primary bachelor's degree program for UIC students wishing to become RDs.
Bachelor of Science, Nutrition Science Track
This program provides students with the coursework required by the American Dietetic Association to be eligible to apply for a dietetic internship at another institution, and therefore be eligible to ultimately take the examination to become a registered dietitian. This program is also for students who do not wish to become registered dietitians, but instead plan to pursue advanced degrees in nutritional sciences or professional degrees in medicine. The Nutrition Science Track focuses on intensive study in biological and physical sciences as a basis for understanding the science of nutrition and the relationships between nutrients and human health. The track requires 19 fewer credits and is two semesters shorter than the Coordinated Program because it does not include a clinical component. The program can be tailored for students who expect to pursue advanced degrees in nutritional sciences or professional degrees in medicine, dentistry or public health. A graduate of the Nutrition Science Track interested in pursuing dietetics may apply for a competitive dietetic internship at a site accredited by the American Dietetic Association. This will qualify you to take the licensure exam to become a registered dietitian. (120 credits + earn a verification statement + complete an accredited internship)dentistry or public health.
Master of Science, Coordinated Program
For students who want to become a registered dietitian
This program is designed for those students who wish to earn a master's degree while gaining eligibility to become a registered dietitian. Enabling graduates to function as practitioners with advanced knowledge in human nutrition and dietetics, the MS program combines graduate-level course work in nutrition with clinical curricula and experience. Each student’s program is tailored according to his or her background, interests and goals.
We currently offer three tracks of study for the MSCP:
- Coursework Only
- Thesis Track
- Project Track
Master of Science, Traditional Program
The Master of Science Traditional Program prepares graduates to function as practitioners with advanced knowledge and skills in human nutrition and dietetics. The program is designed for students interested in pursuing positions as chief clinical dietitian, clinical nutrition specialist, clinical nutrition instructor, and research nutritionist. A graduate may also find employment in industry, community nutrition, public relations, government, private practice, or in research. This program could also serve as preliminary preparation for enrollment in the PhD program.
PhD in Kinesiology, Nutrition and Rehabilitation
This program trains outstanding scholars who will assume research, teaching and service positions in the interdisciplinary area of kinesiology, nutrition, and rehabilitation. Doctoral candidates may choose an emphasis in Motor Control and Musculoskeletal Biomechanics; Integrative Pathophysiology, Nutrition and Health Promotion; or Rehabilitation Sciences.
