BS, Coordinated Program

Required Credit Hours: 78 hours for Coordinated Program; 138 hours total

The Coordinated Program at UIC's Department of Human Nutrition trains students to practice in the field of dietetics. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians to become credentialed as RDs (registered dietitians). Graduates will be prepared for entry-level positions as dietitians in a variety of employment settings such as health care institutions, government organizations, business, industry, and community health agencies. With experience or advanced education, opportunities can be found in research, education, or private practice. The Coordinated Program is a unique program that combines classroom education (didactic) with practical experiences (supervised practice) in all aspects of dietetics: clinical, community, business, and food service management. The program is two semesters longer than the Nutrition Science Track because it includes a clinical component.

The primary role of a registered dietitian is to provide nutritional care to people both in health and disease throughout the life cycle. This needs to be accomplished with nutritional requirements and food habits in mind. Therefore, a dietitian must be knowledgeable in the biological and physical sciences, psychology, sociology, education, and management. The dietitian must also have expertise in food habits, food composition, food service, science of food and nutrition, and energy and nutrient needs.

UIC's coordinated program in dietetics is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education for the American Dietetic Association.
