Management and Leadership in the Non-Profit Disability Organization Certificate Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The University of Illinois at Chicago, Department of Disability and Human Development is offering a graduate-level certificate program in Management and Leadership in the Non-Profit Disability Organization. Courses are designed for professionals planning to work at the management level or as program coordinators within organizations serving people with disabilities.

Courses focus on organizational theory, leadership, and exposure to issues vitally important to the operation of non-profits: board relationships, conflict management, development, governance, and strategic planning. One of the featured courses is an advanced seminar taught by a team of executive directors recruited from major Illinois non-profit agencies. Elective courses are available in the areas of contemporary disability issues, state and national disability policy, and emerging rehabilitation practices.

Students in the certificate program take a sequence of four courses: three required courses and one elective course. The program is flexible; students may complete the program in as little time as two semesters or extend the program across academic years. The certificate requires a total of 12 credit hours. The program consists of a mix of blended face-to-face/online and traditional face-to-face courses.

Classes can be taken individually or as part of the certificate program. Credit hours may be applied towards the Master of Science degree program in Disability and Human Development. Students admitted to the master’s program can apply up to 12 credit hours to their degree status.

To receive full consideration for admission to the certificate program, applications should be received by June 15th of the year in which admission is being sought. After the deadline, students may register for an individual course. When admitted, they may transfer the course(s) to their certificate status.

REQUIRED COURSES

DHD 545: Leadership in the Non-Profit Disability Organization
Fall Semester, 3 credit hours
Focuses on real-world applications in management and leadership in the non-profit disability agency. Foundational content is provided on employee motivation, recruitment, retention, fiscal management, long-range planning, board development and succession planning. The class focuses on self awareness of strengths and challenges as a leader in this industry. This is a blended class, with some face-to-face class meetings.

DHD 547: Analysis and Comparison of For-Profit and Non-Profit Organizations
Spring Semester, 3 credit hours
Blends organizational theory with real-life experiences in the non-profit disability sector. Students will learn core organizational theories, with a special emphasis on non-profit agencies serving people with disabilities. Differences between for-profit and non-profit organizations are addressed, including budgeting and fiscal management. This is a blended class, with some face-to-face class meetings.

DHD 595: Seminar in Executive Leadership
Spring Semester, 3 credit hours
Features topical modules taught by executive directors of leading disability agencies in Illinois. Emphasis is given to real world issues and solutions as practiced by executives widely recognized as leaders in the field. Topics include board relationships, conflict management, development, governance, and strategic planning. This is a traditional face-to-face class.

ELECTIVE COURSES (choose one)

DHD 401: Foundations of Disability and Human Development
Fall Semester, 3 credit hours
Surveys foundational concepts and issues in the field of disability. Students will develop a framework for understanding disability from a multi-disciplinary perspective with emphasis on its social and cultural context. The research programs and scholarship of DHD faculty will be reviewed and examined within this framework. This is a blended class, with some face-to-face class meetings.

DHD 564: Community Integration in Developmental Disabilities
Spring Semester, 3 credit hours
Focuses on historical and contemporary issues pertaining to the empowerment and integration of persons with developmental disabilities into community settings. This is a traditional face-to-face class.

DHD 581: Foundations of Disability Policy
Fall Semester, 3 credit hours
Provides a foundation of disability policy through the examination of policy processes, policy making, and welfare state arrangements. Focus on different political/ideological approaches to disability policy. This is a blended class, with some face-to-face class meetings.

Tuesdays, 5:00 - 7:30 pm
This course will be taught by a team of leading executive directors of Illinois non-profit agencies including Donald Dew, CEO of Habilitative Systems, Inc.; Cathy Ficker Terrill, President and CEO of Ray Graham Association for People with Disabilities; Bob Okazaki, CEO of Avenues to Independence; and Lilia Teninty, Director of the Illinois Division of Developmental Disabilities. This is a traditional face-to-face class.

Face-to-face meetings will be held in the Disability, Health and Social Policy (DHSP) building, located at 1640 West Roosevelt Road, Chicago, Illinois. Course logistics are subject to change.

Tuition and Fee Information

For Spring 2010, the tuition rate for non-degree extramural students is $370 per credit hour, plus a nonrefundable administrative fee of $15 per credit hour. Please note: if you are admitted to a UIC degree program, you are no longer eligible for the OCE hourly extramural tuition rate; you will be assessed regular University range tuition and campus fees.
