students in classroom UIC’s Department of Disability and Human Development has graduate degree programs that prepare students for leadership positions in human services as well as research and scholarship roles in the disability field. We also offer two programs in continuing education.

What is Disability and Human Development?
The study of disability and human development views people with disabilities as an underserved social minority. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, it examines all aspects of society—healthcare, culture, politics, economics, history, legislation, education and social attitudes—that uniquely impact the experience and development of people living with disabilities. The field comprises health researchers, social scientists, community-based activists and rights advocates committed to ensuring that people with disabilities are able to participate fully in society.

What We Offer
MS in Disability and Human Development Program
The Master of Science in Disability and Human Development offers students opportunities for graduate-level training in disability research and scholarship. Graduates of the program are prepared for leadership positions in human service organizations as well as for continuing work in research on disability. Study and research are available in two areas of specialization: disability studies and social policy and rehabilitation technology.

PhD in Disability Studies Program
Seeing the growing need for researchers, educators, administrators and leaders who concentrate on disability, the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences created the world’s first interdisciplinary PhD in Disability Studies. Graduates are uniquely qualified to become teachers, researchers, clinicians and policymakers at institutions in the public, private and governmental sectors.

Assistive Technology Certificate Program
This continuing education program is designed for working professionals to learn more about the different technology that can help people with disabilities lead more independent lives. This is an option for people who want to learn more without going through the full master’s degree program. Students choose four classes to take.
