How to Apply - Biomedical Visualization, MS
Students are admitted in the fall semester only. All application materials are due by February 1 in the year of enrollment.
Application Materials
The following is required for admission:
- Completed UIC Graduate College application
- Application fee - A nonrefundable application
fee (check made out to UIC) of $50 for U.S. or $60 for international
students is required.
- Official transcripts - Submit transcripts from
institutions where degrees were earned and transcripts from all
colleges and universities attended within the last eight years.
- GRE general and writing assessment or GMAT -
Test scores are required for all applicants except those with a
graduate or professional degree at the masters and doctoral levels
(e.g. MS, MA, MFA, PhD, ScD, MD, DDS, DO, DrPH, PharmD) from an
accredited U.S. or Canadian school. Prior training must be relevant
to the basic field of the area of concentration. Applicants with
the above degrees from foreign schools are considered if they are
sponsored by an accepted referral service, such as AFGRAD or AMIDEAST.

of recommendation
- Personal statement - Submit a statement that
addresses your goals for graduate study and career development.
- Portfolio of artwork - This should include 20
samples of artwork in any media, but must include figure drawings
and/or paintings (five minimum). The portfolio can be presented
on 35 mm slides, videotape, computer disk, or CD-ROM. A self-addressed
envelope, which must be large enough to hold the portfolio and affixed
with sufficient postage, must be provided when the portfolio is
submitted. Specifications that identify types of work to include
in a portfolio can be obtained by contacting the BHIS Office of
Graduate Programs.

- International students only: Test of English
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - International applicants
whose native language is not English must pass the Test of English
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Applicants who take the paper-based
TOEFL MUST also take the Test of Written English (TWE). If the applicant
has taken the paper-based TOEFL, minimum scores in the range of
585-600 will be considered; in addition, the applicant must take
the Test of Written English and submit scores in the range of 56.
If the student has taken the TOEFL iBT, a minimum total score of
95 will be considered. The sub-scores must be at least 24 in Reading,
24 in Speaking, 22 in Listening, 24 in Writing. If the applicant
has taken the computer-based TOEFL, minimum scores in the range
of 240-250 will be considered. In this case the Test of Written

If the student has taken the TOEFL iBT, a minimum total score of

Strong verbal and written communication skills are extremely important
in the biomedical visualization program. Above average scores on
the written exam are expected in the GRE, TOEFL, and GMAT.
