DHD professor focuses on fitness ops for disabled
Disability and Human Development Professor Jim Rimmer is co-chairing the recently formed Inclusive Fitness Coalition, founded to address barriers that can prevent millions of Americans with physical and cognitive disabilities from leading active, healthy lives. The barriers, say coalition members, include difficulty getting to and into facilities, finding accessible equipment, and locating affordable, professional trainers who understand their conditions. At a January 24 press conference in Washington, D.C., the coalition issued a call to action and proposed solutions that can highlight the problems and create a strong commitment to change from all sectors of society. Formed by the National Center on Physical Activity and Disability along with the American College of Sports Medicine, the coalition comprises researchers, advocates, fitness industry representatives, elected and appointed officials, and others. Alumna brings HIM to Chicago schools
Health Information Management alumna Gerri Smothers ’82, founder of the Jordan Evans Institute, a workforce training school, received a grant to offer “Principles of HIM” as part of the health sciences curriculum at Percy Julian High School in Chicago’s Washington Heights neighborhood. The first session was offered in January. HIM Program Director, Karen Patena, wrote a letter of support for the grant. If successful, the course will likely be extended to other Chicago public schools with health sciences curricula.
