Patricia Politano has a dual position as coordinator for augmentative communication (AAC) services at UIC's, Assistive Technology Unit and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Disability and Human Development. Dr. Politano is a speech-language pathologist with 20 years experience in assistive technology and AAC. She is the author of the Inventory of Functional Communication, co-author of the “Augmentative Communication” chapter of Assistive Technology & Occupational Therapy: A Link to Function, self-paced clinical course published by the American Occupational Therapy Association and co-author of the web materials for “Technology for Functional Communication" in the American Occupational Therapy Association Web-Based Workshop, Integrating Assistive Technology into Your Practice. Dr. Politano is dedicated to the enhancement of professional preparation programs as well as the education of working professionals impacting individuals who rely on AAC. She has presented nationally and internationally on issues related to assessment and maximizing use of AAC systems and collaborates with colleagues internationally to promote AAC services around the world. Research Interests
Research interests include participatory research in AAC; social and strategic domains of communicative competence; and outcome measurement. Current research includes collaboration with people who use AAC, to identify personal and environmental factors in successful interactions with non-disabled communication partners.
