James Charlton, MA Research Assistant Professor | | | Phone | | | Fax | | | Email | JCharlton@accessliving.org | Bio James Charlton has worked at Access Living as Director of Programs, Executive Vice President and Acting President since 1985. Mr. Charlton was also Mayor Harold Washington's first appointment to the Chicago Transit Authority's Board of Directors. He was a Chicago Community Trust Fellow in 1992 and 1993. He has a graduate degree from the University of Chicago.
Jim has written and lectured widely on such diverse topics as independent living, disability rights, energy policy, travel, culture and politics and sports. He has taught Disability Studies at the University of Illinois since 2000. His most recent book Nothing About Us Without Us: Disability Oppression and Empowerment (University of California Press) was published in 1998.
