Alumna Helen Massey joins AHS staff to lead alumni relations

Dean Toby Tate and the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences are pleased to announce that Helen Arnold-Massey, EdD (MS Kines ’93), has joined the Office of the Dean as director of alumni relations. Her initial work will focus on redesigning our college’s alumni relations program by identifying successful ways to stay connected with this valued part of our academic community.

Helen has been affiliated with the college since receiving the AHS Distinguished Alumna Award in 2001. Most recently, she volunteered to mentor a small group of students of color, helping them develop their leadership skills. She did this while finishing her doctorate in education at Illinois State University.

“She is such a positive person,” says Dean Toby Tate. “She’s someone you can spend just a few minutes with and walk away feeling better than when you walked in. I can’t think of a better personality to represent our college to students and alumni.”

In addition to her doctorate, Helen holds a BS in education from DePaul University and an MS in kinesiology from the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences. Before joining UIC, she worked for 17 years with Chicago Public Schools and the Illinois State Board of Education in various roles from elementary school teacher to liaison in the teacher-induction program, which aided educator retention by connecting new teachers with mentors and resources. A nationally recognized leader, she’s been honored with many awards, including the City of Chicago’s Kathy Osterman Award for Superior Public Service in Education, UIC’s City Partner Award and the Milken Family Foundation’s National Educator Award.
