History

The UIC College of Applied Health Sciences began in 1961 as the School of Associated Medical Sciences in the College of Medicine. As our programs developed and our student body grew, the following needs became clear:

  • to recognize our programs as mature, vital curricula;
  • to move them out of the College of Medicine, where they were seen as second class; and
  • to give them a dean seated at the highest table within the university.

Those needs were met on January 1, 1979, when the College of Associated Health Professions was created.

After 20 years of scholarly richness, the college merged with the College of Kinesiology and the Institute on Disability and Human Development. As a result of the expansion, our college broadened its name to Health and Human Development Sciences.

With the implementation of new graduate programs and ever-increasing research grants, our name was finalized in 2001 to the College of Applied Health Sciences. Housed in buildings spanning the campus, our college encourages heightened interdisciplinary collaboration and a strong commitment to teaching, research and public service.

In 2009, we are celebrating our 30th anniversary as a college. Time has transformed us in many ways, but we remain steadfast in our promise to produce the very best health professionals needed by Illinois. We are firm in our commitment to engender a cycle of transformation: an AHS education transforms students; students go out to transform patients and clients; and finally, patients and clients transform themselves and their worlds through improved health, ability and optimism.
